Volvo Car Battery

The Winter season has been brutal on car batteries.

A weakened battery can easily fail to start your vehicle, leaving you stranded at the most  inopportune time;during bad weather, late at night in a dark car parking lot, and in dangerously cold temperatures.

A weakend car battery may strike early in the morning, or just when you are late for an appointment. How aggravating is that?, I know the feeling because it’s happened to me too.

The money you are spending getting your car towed to our service center could easily be spend purchasing a new battery.

Symptoms of a dying battery include:-

  • Age of your battery, more than three years old due to grid corrosion.
  • Abnormally slow cranking, especially on a cold day
  • Frozen battery, the electrolyte solution is 65% water. Deep discharges in freezing weather will cause the battery to freeze and the expansion of the electrolyte can damage the plates, separators or even crack the battery case.

Typically, your vehicle’s battery loses 50% of its power when the temperature falls below zero.

Ironically that is when your engine needs the most cranking power to turn over the engine, to run the heat and the defroster.

Common causes of premature battery failure:

  • Lack of preventive maintenance
  • Undercharging due to driving habits. Short trips leave the car battery constantly undercharged and sulfated.
  • Battery post or terminal corrosion, which cause charging and discharging problems.
  • High ambient temperatures above 77° F (25° C) causing accelerated positive grid growth or corrosion, increased self-discharge.
  • Excessive deep discharges below 10.5 volts, such as leaving your vehicle’s lights on.
  • Undersized battery. The wrong size battery for your vehicle.
  • Excessive vibration caused by loose hold down clamps or vehicle running on rough surfaces.
